Feeling seen : the photographs of Campbell Addy [ed. Anna Godfrey ;‏ foreword Edward Enninful]

Non-Luxembourgish

The photographer Campbell Addy, one of the recipients of the British Fashion Awards New Wave: Creatives in 2019, brings a new perspective to fashion photography. It is still an industry where Black people are scarce, therefore his contribution to highlight Black beauty and diversity is so important. His work stood out at the very nice exhibition The New Black Vanguard in the Saatchi Gallery earlier this year, exploring the influence of art, fashion and culture in the making of photographs. The exhibition catalogue is also available in our collection. The title of the book “Feeling seen” conveys the idea of fitting in as a person and an artist wishing his world to be discovered. He felt like an outsider during his studies at Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, being Black, queer and having had a Jehovah’s Witness upbringing. Although Blackness is a central theme in his work, he doesn’t want to be reduced to be only defined by that. I chose this book for the incredible aesthetic of the images and the feeling of closeness between the artist and his models that shines through.
