Demon Copperhead Barbara Kingsolver
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver is this year’s winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the Women’s Prize for fiction. The novel is a reimagining of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield in modern America. It tells the gripping story of a small Appalachian population torn apart by the enduring issues of poverty and neglect in contemporary society and follows a boy born to a teenage single mother in a small trailer, who faces numerous challenges such as foster care, child labour, addiction and heartbreak. Kingsolver skillfully shows that institutional crises of the Victorian era are still present in a modern setting, representing a new generation of marginalised individuals.
