Secrets of the great ocean liners John G. Sayers

Non-Luxembourgish

This richly illustrated book is for all those who want to travel back in time to the golden age of sea voyages and ocean liners, which stretched from the end of the 19th century to World War II. It was written by John G. Sayers, a collector of ocean liner ephemera and whose collection now resides in the John Johnson Collection at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Fascinated by both design and social history, he tried to assemble everything that could contribute to creating a picture as complete as possible of the sea voyages of that time, from the planning, to the stay on board and potential follow-up experiences, so that his collection contained a huge variety of objects with, on the one hand, official documents such as brochures and booklets, timetables, passenger lists and menus, and, on the other hand, private writings such as journals, letters, postcards and diaries. With this book, he guides his readers through a lively and vivid history of sea travel, allowing insightful glimpses behind the scenes.
