This film follows the investigation of two New York Times reporters into the systemic sexual harassment happening inside Miramax. Although we know the outcome of the story, the film still grips as it concentrates on how journalists have to follow leads, track down victims, convince them to speak and persuade them to make their testimony public. The film was shot with the help of the real journalists Twohey and Kantor who wrote the New York Times article “Harvey Weinstein paid off sexual harassment accusers for decades” (5.10.2017).
The DVD bonus includes their interesting comments on journalism and the pursuit of divulging the truth behind power, gender and the workplace. Their article steered Weinstein’s conviction and was the spark that set off the #MeToo movement and led to legislation and attitude changes around the world. The film also delves in the personal lives of the journalists and their difficulty handling work-life balance as they uncover the victims’ frightening stories. The film benefits from the fact that it was shot in the real NY Times offices and that actress Ashley Judd plays herself as she was Weinstein’s victim in real life. Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan give great performances as the journalists. The Harvey Weinstein character is only seen once from behind but his chilling voice is heard over the phone as his tries to intimidate the journalists. The film is ultimately a tribute to the importance of well researched journalism and the social change that it can induce.
