Ecotourism. Transitioning to the 22nd century
Stephen Wearing and Stephen SchweinsbergSeptember 27 marks the annual World Tourism Day. It has been celebrated by the United Nations World Tourism Organization since 1980 to increase awareness of tourism as an important global sector affecting social, cultural, political and economic values. With a special theme being highlighted each year, in 2025, the focus is set on “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, thus showing the potential of tourism to bring about positive social and environmental change.
Accordingly, this book deals with the transformative power of tourism especially regarding the effects on nature and local communities. It looks at the developments of ecotourism over time and how it is likely to evolve towards the 22nd century, while it is still influenced by the rules of the neoliberal market. According to the authors, much will be determined by the way of thinking of all the actors concerned by travel. Tourism should thus be embedded in a general, sustainable mindset that goes even beyond travel and will be more a question of attitude. Consequently, education will play a key role in this matter, as it contributes largely to responsible and transformative learning. Case studies from emerging markets finally illustrate the author’s theses.
The book will certainly be of interest for students and researchers in tourism, sociology, geography as well as in environmental and sustainability studies but also for professionals and all those interested in more ethical and responsible travel.
