The idea of Cuba photogr. and text by Alex Harris ; with an essay by Lillian Guerra

Non-Luxembourgish

Alex Harris made three voyages to Cuba to record the collapse of the island’s economy and social fabric following the disintegration of the socialist bloc in 1989. His photographs focus on the women and the symbols representing Cuba. The excellent text explains the legacy of the hero José Martí (1853-1895), a poet and essayist who fought for Cuba’s independence against Spain and describes the Cuban national identity. The Yale historian Lillian Guerra, whose parents are Cuban exiles in America, gives a different impression about what it means to be Cuban.
