Maps. Their untold stories
Rose Mitchell and Andrew Janes
This book is a journey through the history of cartography, which holds a wealth of treasures from the UK’s National Archives. The author’s aim is to offer readers a selection of the most impressive maps and plans, whilst at the same time providing relevant background information. The focus is in in fact on highlighting diversity, rather than on completeness or representativeness.
It is a book that can both fascinate and overwhelm, and which certainly gives a good overall impression of what cartography was all about in earlier centuries. It reveals a great deal of information also about the cartographers and the historical, cultural and socio-economic context of their creations, so that anyone looking for a lively introduction to the subject will certainly find this book a rewarding read.
