National Bibliography

The National Library compiles and publishes the National Bibliography of publications entered by legal deposit or acquired as a supplement. It lists all publications, both printed and digital, published in Luxembourg, as well as those released abroad relating to the Grand Duchy.

Searching and viewing

References are categorised by topic on the portal of the National Bibliography and you can browse through the various subjects or search by title, author, subject, year of publication or keywords. The portal also allows you to make reservation requests for documents available for home loan or for on-site consultation.

What documents are listed?

The listed documents include publications published and printed in Luxembourg, as well as those published abroad and relating to the Grand Duchy, its nationals or its inhabitants. Also included are publications created by authors from Luxembourg or linked to the Grand Duchy.

By contrast, certain types of document are not included in the census. These include advertising documents of no documentary interest, programmes of festivities with no feature article, and works of ephemeral value such as telephone directories, timetables, price lists and other similar publications. Postcards are not included either. Finally, publications issued by European Union bodies, if they do not specifically concern the Grand Duchy, are not included in the listing.

About this service

The first edition of the National Bibliography of Luxembourg was published in 1946, covering the period from 10 September 1944, to 31 December 1945. Thereafter, it was published annually until 2005 (reference year 2004), at which point the National Library discontinued the print edition in favour of a continuously updated digital version.

The current National Bibliography, which is accessible online, covers Luxembourgish publications that have entered the National Library since 1985. Publications prior to this date will be gradually added to complete this essential collection.
