This is a captivating movie about the scientists who developed penicillin in Oxford from 1938 to 1942. It shows their fight to get the state grants, to convince the pharmaceutical industry to invest money, the difficult conditions they work in and the perseverance it takes to pursue after their initial hopes are crushed. It is also a story of the power struggle for the attribution of the invention and the importance to apply for a patent. Dominic West plays a principled scientist who manages to lead his team with success by getting the best out of each one and proves that he is also credible in a serious role. The film also shows the delicate passage of drug trials from animal testing to humans and the burden that puts on the doctors and scientists.
