The assassination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand (born in 1863), and his wife, Archduchess Sophie (born in 1868), in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 heralded the beginning of a spiral that would tip the Old Continent into a bloody conflict lasting four long years.
