Ragtime [Film]

dir. by Milos Forman

"The page-turning joys of E.L. Doctorow's bestselling novel Ragtime, which dizzily and entertainingly paints a kaleidoscopic panorama of the racial tensions, infidelity and violence of an early 1900s America in the midst of intense social change, have been realized almost completely in Milos Forman's superbly crafted screen adaptation. Rather than trying to cram in the entire jumble of people, places, and things from the book, Forman elects instead to concentrate on the story of Coalhouse Walker Jr., a young black pianist who becomes embroiled in the lives of an upper-class white family. The result is a beautifully mounted, graceful film that develops its characters with great clarity. Perhaps only an immigrant, and a recent one such as Milos Forman, could have made this film, which looks squarely at the social problems gnawing at America but which nevertheless finds cause for hope. A truly powerhouse cast, headed by the legendary James Cagney in his final big-screen role, includes: Pat O'Brien, Elizabeth McGovern, Mary Steenburgen, Norman Mailer, Samuel L. Jackson etc."
