Managing the unknown : essays on environmental ignorance
ed. by Frank Uekötter...[et al.]«Information is crucial when it comes to the management of resources. But what if knowledge is incomplete, or biased, or otherwise deficient? How did people define patterns of proper use in the absence of cognitive certainty? Discussing this challenge for a diverse set of resources from fish to rubber, these essays show that deficient knowledge is a far more pervasive challenge in resource history than conventional readings suggest. Furthermore, environmental ignorance does not inevitably shrink with the march of scientific progress: these essays suggest more of a dialectical relationship between knowledge and ignorance that has different shapes and trajectories. With its combination of empirical case studies and theoretical reflection, the essays make a significant contribution to the interdisciplinary debate on the production and resilience of ignorance. At the same time, this volume combines insights from different continents as well as the seas in between and thus sketches outlines of an emerging global resource history. »

Der Tunnel

Der Schwimmmeister Harry Melchior (Heino Ferch), der die menschenverachtenden Machenschaften der Stasi aus vierjähriger Haft kennt, will nicht den Rest seines Lebens hinter einer Mauer verbringen. So folgt er seinem Freund, dem Bauingenieurstudenten Matthis Hiller (Sebastian Koch). Die Wiedersehensfreude ist jedoch getrübt durch die Sehnsucht nach Lotte und Carola -- Harrys über alles geliebter Schwester und Matthis schwangerer Freundin, die bei ihrem gemeinsamen Fluchtversuch zurückblieb. Verena Bach«Der Teufel ist immer wieder im Spiel – im Spielfilm ist er in vielgestaltiger Konzeption vertreten. Warum muss der Teufel heute noch als griffiges Bild des Bösen herhalten? Inwiefern stehen menschliche Figuren bei einer Begegnung mit dem Teufel im Angesicht des Bösen? Der Teufel mag an den Fäden ziehen, doch wer hält die Fäden in der Hand? Verena Bach ergründet seit 1980 entstandene Filme mit Teufelsfiguren und interessiert sich für das Wie der Darstellung des Teufels, der mit Normalitätsmaske und kleinen Aufmerksamkeiten oder als apokalyptische Extremfigur auftritt.
