Ist es der unterfinanzierte Hutträger und Regie-Anfänger David Sieveking oder sein Idol, der weltberühmte Filmemacher und militante Sekten-Unterstützer David Lynch? Dessen Sekte sind die Transzendentalen Meditierer – bekannt durch ihren kürzlich verstorbenen Chef Maharishi Mahesh Yogi und seine berühmtesten Jünger, die Beatles – und die wollen schließlich neben allerhand anderem Schnickschnack auch qua Meditation die Schwerkraft aufheben. Nun ist der Ruf von David Lynch durch sein Engagement für diese Leute ohnehin derartig ramponiert, dass es wahrscheinlich leicht wäre, eine Art Biopsie spezifischer Künstlerverblödungen zu erstellen. Aber die Geschichte verläuft ganz anders. Der begabte junge Filmemacher Sieveking beschließt, selber gläubig zu werden. Er reist zu allerlei Welttreffen der Transzendentalen Meditierer, wird als vielversprechendes Mitglied hofiert und trifft alte und neue Gurus, ja bizarre Heilige wie einen dicklichen »König von Deutschland«, der Deutschland unbesiegbar machen will (durch Meditation). David Sieveking beginnt erst in dem Moment zu zweifeln, als er mitkriegt, dass es ums Geld geht. Und da ist mit deutschen Seelensuchern nicht zu spaßen. Religion und Geld gehen für sie nicht zusammen.“

Background information and commentary are provided unobtrusively via subtitles and by Aida himself, resulting in a casual, appealing tone that invites viewers to arrive at their own conclusions based mainly on what they see of Aida’s behavior, work methods and art. The artist is an easy figure to like. He consistently exudes an unpretentious, relaxed and, in some cases, even lazy mentality, comically illustrated by the many breaks from work that he grants himself throughout the film. In many cases, Aida reinterprets and experiments with Japanese art forms like manga, anime and the older Ukiyoe painting and block printing style. But as inventive as Aida’s work is, both he and the film make it clear that much of the so-called creative process simply consists of hard work. “I put a heavy value on the accidental emergence of an idea,” he says. “This step is only the creative aspect, and the next step is manual labor. This is a boring job. No pleasure.”

In the previous 15 years, he had only made two movies--the misunderstood Dodes'ka-den and the Russian-financed Dersu Uzala. Kagemusha was financed in part by a deal with Suntory whiskey and American funding by producers Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. Set in the 16th Century during a time of civil war, Kagemusha is based on real events, the title translates as "Shadow Warrior," and the script by Kurosawa and Masato Ide is an old man's version of the "Prince and the Pauper" fable. The film deals with a subject of real historical importance: the consolidation of power in Japan in a central military government during the Momoyama period. This followed hundreds of years of civil war, and led to the stable period of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Kagemusha depicts the battle for rule of Japan, as centering around three rivals. Sumptuously reconstructing the splendor of feudal Japan and the pageantry of war, Kurosawa creates a soaring historical epic that is also a somber meditation on the nature of power.» Winner of the Palm D'Or at Cannes

dir. by Henry Alex Rubin, Dana Adam Shapiro"More than merely a sports documentary or an inspirational profile of triumph over adversity, Murderball offers a refreshing and progressive attitude toward disability while telling unforgettable stories about uniquely admirable people. It's ostensibly a film about quadriplegic rugby (or "Murderball," as it was formerly known), in which players with at least some loss of physical function in all four limbs navigate modified wheelchairs in a hardcore, full-contact sport that takes them all the way to the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 2004. But as we get to know paralyzed or amputee players on Team USA like Andy Cohn, Scott Hogsett, Bob Lujano and charismatic team spokesman Mark Zupan, we come to understand that quad rugby is a saving grace for these determined competitors, who battle Team Canada coach (and former Team USA superstar) Joe Soares en route to the climactic contest in Athens. Simply put, Murderball is the best film to date about living with a severe disability, but codirectors Henry Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro avoid the sappy, inspirational sentiment that hampers nearly all mainstream films involving disability. By the time this blazing 85-minute film reaches its emotional conclusion, the issue of disability is almost irrelevant."

L’un et l’autre naissent d’un même souffle, d’un même élan, au terme d’un intense recueillement. Cette prosodie singulière de l’impair remonte à la nuit des temps et chaque poème ainsi libellé par de véritables artistes issus d’écoles du genre, évoque un événement insignifiant au premier chef mais cependant témoin d’une harmonie délicate et fugitive des instants de la vie quotidienne. «Après la guerre, un certain nombre de soldats japonais ont préféré ne pas rentrer au pays. Imamura part à leur recherche en Malaisie puis en Thaïlande afin de comprendre pourquoi ils ont préféré rester sur place, comment ils ont vécu leur "après-guerre", ce qu'ils pensent de leur patrie. Shôhei Imamura (1926-2006), l'enfant terrible de la Nouvelle Vague japonaise, tourne alors une série de films sur les citoyens japonais abandonnés, avec la volonté d'aller au-delà de l'histoire officielle. Bonus: "Karayuki san" (="Ces dames qui vont au loin", 1971, 72 min.): un documentaire de Shohei Imamura sur "l'exportation" de prostituées au début du XXe siècle. »
