Kagemusha [Film] = Der Schatten des Kriegers
Regie Akira Kurosawa ; Drehbuch Akira Kurosawa, Masato Ide«Kagemusha is not a young man's film. Released in 1980, it was made when Akira Kurosawa was 70. In the previous 15 years, he had only made two movies--the misunderstood Dodes'ka-den and the Russian-financed Dersu Uzala. Kagemusha was financed in part by a deal with Suntory whiskey and American funding by producers Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. Set in the 16th Century during a time of civil war, Kagemusha is based on real events, the title translates as "Shadow Warrior," and the script by Kurosawa and Masato Ide is an old man's version of the "Prince and the Pauper" fable. The film deals with a subject of real historical importance: the consolidation of power in Japan in a central military government during the Momoyama period. This followed hundreds of years of civil war, and led to the stable period of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Kagemusha depicts the battle for rule of Japan, as centering around three rivals. Sumptuously reconstructing the splendor of feudal Japan and the pageantry of war, Kurosawa creates a soaring historical epic that is also a somber meditation on the nature of power.» Winner of the Palm D'Or at Cannes

Mark Ravenhill«Mark Ravenhill has established himself as one of the most important playwrights to emerge from the 1990s. Anziehung und Abstoßung vertauschen im Exil ihre Pole. In Hollywood komponiert er für die Filmindustrie und kritisiert sie zugleich in seinem Buch »Komposition für den Film«; mit seiner Filmmusik ist er zwar erfolgreich, aber seine ernste Musik wird nicht beachtet; zeitweise verdient er gut, doch Schulden zehren immer wieder die Einkünfte auf. In seinen Liedern aus Hollywood beklagt er die Barbarei der Heimat und die Öde der Zuflucht. Orlan : le récit = the narrative
«Since 1990, French-born artist Orlan has done seven plastic surgery "performances" which have radically reconstructed her face. She last added futuristic-looking pads of skin to each temple--utilizing the process which ordinarily constructs heightened cheekbones. In a 1998 digital photography series called "Self Hybridization," she montaged pictures of herself with images of Pre-Columbian, American Indian, African and "mutant" figures. Notorious for the kind of stunts that make good sound bites--on French television in 1993, she gave Madonna a reliquary containing a few grams of flesh that had been removed during surgery, to which Madonna replied, "It looks like caviar"--Orlan has been the subject of a host of critical writings in the fields of Feminism, Body art and Performance art. Orlan's most definitive monograph to date, this volume contextualizes past works--which include not only performance, but painting, sculpture, photography and poetry--with the plastic surgery pieces for which she is best known. It is published following the artist's first museum retrospective, which took place at the Museum of Modern Art in Sainte-Etienne, France, on the occasion of her sixtieth birthday, in 2007. Organized by Lorand Hegyi, co-curator of the 2003 Venice Biennale, the retrospective brought Orlan's entire oeuvre together for the first time.»

The Mexican suitcase : the rediscovered Spanish civil war negatives of Capa, Chim and Taro
ed. by Cynthia Young«Sometimes, even in the world of photography, miracles happen. On 19 December 2007, three battered, commonplace cardboard boxes arrived at the International Center of Photography in New York. Within these boxes the so-called Mexican Suitcase was a treasure trove of photographic history believed lost since World War II: the legendary Spanish Civil War negatives of Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and David Seymour (known as Chim). The Mexican Suitcase contained 126 rolls of film, mostly shot between May 1936 and spring 1939, that are an inestimable record of innovative war photography and of a definitive episode in Spanish history. The photographs include Capas images of the Battle of Rio Segre, Chims famous image of a woman nursing a baby at a land reform meeting in Estremadura, and Taros last photos at the Battle of Brunete where she was killed in 1937. The story of the Mexican Suitcase itself is as fascinating as the photographs it contained. Carried by Capas studio manager from Paris to Bordeaux by bicycle in 1939, it came into the possession of General Francisco Aguilar González, the Mexican ambassador to the Vichy government in 194142, and found its way to Mexico City. Decades later the suitcase was discovered among Gonzálezs belongings and in 2007 was given to ICP, founded by Robert Capas brother Cornell Capa and home of the Capa and Taro archives as well as a large Chim collection. In 1979, Cornell Capa had implored the public to come forward with information about the Mexican Suitcase which he had spent years looking for: Anyone who has information regarding the suitcase should contact me and will be blessed in advance. This landmark two-volume publication, which accompanies a major exhibition at ICP and reproduces all 4,500 negatives from the suitcase, embodies the blessing Capa spoke of and presents the miraculous contents of the suitcase to the public for the first time.»

Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi [Film] = Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland

Murderball [Film]

It's ostensibly a film about quadriplegic rugby (or "Murderball," as it was formerly known), in which players with at least some loss of physical function in all four limbs navigate modified wheelchairs in a hardcore, full-contact sport that takes them all the way to the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 2004. But as we get to know paralyzed or amputee players on Team USA like Andy Cohn, Scott Hogsett, Bob Lujano and charismatic team spokesman Mark Zupan, we come to understand that quad rugby is a saving grace for these determined competitors, who battle Team Canada coach (and former Team USA superstar) Joe Soares en route to the climactic contest in Athens. Simply put, Murderball is the best film to date about living with a severe disability, but codirectors Henry Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro avoid the sappy, inspirational sentiment that hampers nearly all mainstream films involving disability. By the time this blazing 85-minute film reaches its emotional conclusion, the issue of disability is almost irrelevant."

Tony Takitani [Film]

Seine Mutter starb wenige Tage nach seiner Geburt und sein Vater verbrachte mehr Zeit mit seiner Jazzband als mit seinem Sohn. Einsamkeit schien für Tony ein natürlicher Zustand zu sein. Sein Leben verändert sich jedoch grundlegend, als er sich in die attraktive Eiko verliebt, die er wenig später heiratet. Zum ersten Mal erlebt Tony das Glück von Nähe und Geborgenheit. Dies wird allerdings durch Eikos exzessive Leidenschaft für Designer-Klamotten getrübt. Als sich ein ganzer Raum mit den teuren Kleidungsstücken füllt, bittet Tony seine junge Frau, ihre Einkäufe einzuschränken. Eiko stimmt ihm zu, doch keiner ahnt, welche dramatischen Folgen diese Entscheidung haben wird... Wer die literarische Vorlage und andere Erzählungen Murakamis kennt, weiß, wie filmisch dieser Autor erzählt. Ganz offen gesteht er, der einst an der Filmhochschule studierte, wie sehr er vom Kino beeinflusst ist. Jun Ichikawa gelingt dies in diesem allerersten Versuch, Murakami zu verfilmen, hervorragend. Ein Film, der bezaubert, der wie Tonys Lieblingsmusik, der aus dem Hintergrund erklingende Piano-Jazz, leicht, wie improvisiert wirkt und dabei überaus genau gestaltet ist. Obschon der Regisseur den Erzählton der Vorlage beibehält, und vieles aus dem Off beschrieben wird, ist Tony Takitani ein visueller Film. Nie wird es »literarisch«, es ist immer ganz Kino. Das ist zuallererst einer glänzenden Kamera zu verdanken, die ständig im Bewegung bleibt, den Flow der Existenz und die Unübersichtlichkeit, zugleich die Verlassenheit, die Tony Takitanis Dasein prägen, ins Visuelle fasst.»
