    « Genteel and not-so-genteel decline is a constant in the literature of the southern states, and the post-industrial era is prompting notably raw and stark additions. Californian writer Katherine Faw Morris is the latest to reinvigorate this heritage with her debut novel Young God. Her radical, and at times shocking, approach is to downplay the elegiac and to search for the poetry in depravity. The story concerns a criminal underclass in the Appalachian foothills for whom abuse of all kinds is a quotidian reality. In her focus on lawless backwoods life, Morris’s writing resembles the southern noir of Daniel Woodrell and, to a lesser degree, the grotesque southern gothic of William Gay. These genres are often rooted in crime and violence, played out in impoverished communities with conservative mores. » KATHERINE FAW MORRIS is a native of northwest North Carolina. She studied at Columbia and currently lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two pitbulls. Young God is her debut novel.

    „Im Kalten Krieg existierten in Westeuropa zahlreiche Untergrundorganisationen, die im Fall eines sowjetischen Überfalls hinter der Front als Partisanen Sabotageaktionen ausführen sollten. Dazu wurden Kämpfer geschult und geheime Erddepots mit Waffen, Sprengstoff und Funkgeräten angelegt. In der Bundesrepublik unterstand diese Stay-Behind-Truppe dem Auslandsnachrichtendienst BND, der eigentlich im Inland gar nicht aktiv werden sollte. Das alles geschah hinter dem Rücken der dafür zuständigen parlamentarischen Kontrollgremien, denn auch ein möglicher Putsch gegen gewählte Politiker wurde erwogen. Erst Anfang der 1990er Jahre flogen die illegalen Netzwerke auf. Es dauerte mehr als 20 Jahre, bis der BND Akten über seine Geheimarmee freigab und Interviews mit ehemaligen SBO-Mitarbeitern zuließ. Anhand dieser Materialien und umfangreicher CIA-Akten geben die Autoren nun einen genauen Einblick in die Aktivitäten, Personalstrukturen und Operationsszenarien der dubiosen Geheimorganisationen und fragen nach dem Funktionieren demokratischer Kontrollmechanismen.“

    “The book is an introduction to the science and possible applications of Graphene, the first one-atom-thick crystalline form of matter. Discovered in 2004 by now Nobelists Geim and Novoselov, the single layer of graphite, a hexagonal network of carbon atoms, has astonishing electrical and mechanical properties. It supports the highest electrical current density of any material, far exceeding metals copper and silver. Its absolute minimum thickness, 0.34 nanometers, provides an inherent advantage in possible forms of digital electronics past the era of Moore's Law. The book describes the unusual physics of the material, that it offers linear rather than parabolic energy bands. The Dirac-like electron energy bands lead to high constant carrier speed, similar to light photons. The lattice symmetry further implies a two-component wave-function, which has a practical effect of cancelling direct backscattering of carriers. The resulting high carrier mobility allows observation of the Quantum Hall Effect at room temperature, unique to Graphene. The material is two-dimensional, but in sizes micrometers nearly to meters displays great tensile strength but vanishing resistance to bending. The book reviews theoretical predictions of excessive atomic vibrational motion, tied to the dimensionality. As explained, these predictions seem not of practical consequence, and such effects are unobservable in samples up to nearly one meter size. The disintegration temperature of this refractory material is estimated as 4900K, certainly higher than the measured sublimation temperature of graphite, 3900K. As explained, applications of Graphene come in classes that range from additives to composite materials to field effect transistor elements capable of extremely high frequency operation. The classes of applications correlate with differing methods of fabrication, from inexpensive chemical exfoliations of graphite, to chemical vapour deposition on catalytic substrates as Cu and Ni, at temperatures around 1300K. The book reviews potential applications within existing electronics, to include interconnect wires, flash-memory elements, and high frequency field effect transistors. The chance to supplant the dominant CMOS family of silicon logic devices is assessed.”

Some 11-10,000 years ago bands of hunter-gatherers started to abandon their high-mobility lifestyles in favour of growing crops, and the creation of settled, sedentary communities. This shift into agricultural lifestyle triggered the evolution of complex political and economic structures, and technological developments, and ultimately underpinned the rise of all the great civilisations of recent human history. Domestication of Plants in the Old World reviews and synthesises the information on the origins and domestication of cultivated plants in the Old World, and subsequently the spread of cultivation from southwest Asia into Asia, Europe, and North Africa, from the very earliest beginnings. This book is mainly based on detailed consideration of two lines of evidences: the plant remains found at archaeological sites, and the knowledge that has accumulated about the present-day wild relatives of domesticated plants. This new edition revises and updates previous data and incorporates the most recent findings from molecular biology about the genetic relations between domesticated plants and their wild ancestors, and incorporates extensive new archaeological data about the spread of agriculture within the region. Auflage korrigiert verschiedene kleine Fehler und berücksichtigt zahlreiche Anregungen und Hinweise aufmerksamer Leser; viele Abbildungen wurden überarbeitet. Die heutige Verteilung von Kontinenten und Ozeanen ist das Ergebnis von Prozessen, die sich in einem Zeitraum von mehr als vier Milliarden Jahren durch Wechselwirkung von fester Erde, Hydrosphäre, Atmosphäre und Biosphäre abspielten.
