Combining some elements of The Rainbow with Women in Love, this adaptation focuses on the lives of two sisters, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen, as they struggle with their own loves, desires and passions. The drama follows their relationships with two friends, Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich. As Ursula and Birkin's friendship and love develops, Gudrun and Gerald's stormy and destructive relationship begins to spiral out of control.

    Luc Bondy plonge dans la cascade des surprises amoureuses de Marivaux pour explorer avec fascination le labyrinthe des relations humaines. Marivaux et Bondy ont en commun le goût immodéré du voyage. Non pas celui qui conduirait vers des rivages vierges, mais celui qui explore l’univers si complexe des relations humaines. La pièce s’ouvre par les soupirs d’une dame affligée. La Marquise est veuve depuis peu : « Il n’y a plus de consolation pour moi » affirme-t-elle à sa domestique effarée. Comme par un fait exprès, Le Chevalier a aussi perdu son amour. Angélique, recluse au couvent pour empêcher un mariage forcé, ne sera jamais sienne et l’honnête homme entend « se confiner dans le fond de sa province, pour y finir une vie qui lui est à charge ». Mis en présence l’un de l’autre pour un motif quasi anodin, les deux êtres se découvrent, « reconnaissent » leur douleur. Et là, très exactement, surgit une question qui semble avoir passionné Marivaux: comment naît l’amour?

However, there's precious little inspiration or hope to found in Kaye's film. It is by turns searing and silly, a movie that cranks up the melodrama to ridiculous proportions but lingers with you due to the undeniably potent moments of raw truth it contains. Brody's performance thoughtfully summarizes far too many present-day teachers: good-hearted people who have slowly but surely been defeated by years of ceaseless opposition on every level.”

Die Regisseure greifen ernste Themen auf, die sie mit emotionaler Wucht, aber auch mit ruhiger Zurückhaltung darstellen. Gleichzeitig haben sie gekonnt die besondere, bezaubernde Atmosphäre der heißen, langen, hellen Sommertage Georgiens eingefangen.

While that sounds bleak--and the setting in a small town on the East coast of Scotland is certainly stark--there is considerable human warmth in Alan Rickman's directorial debut. Without a conventional story, Rickman simply cuts between four strands, spending most of the time with the difficult relationship between a mother and daughter, played by real-life parent and offspring Phyllida Law and Emma Thomson. Strong dialogue, with a dash of Samuel's Beckett's existential squabbling angst and outstanding performances make this both funny and touching. Meanwhile Thomson's teenage son begins a tentative romance with the new girl in town, two younger boys bunk off school to the icy beach and a pair of elderly ladies attends a funeral. »
