On the mines
David Goldblatt ; Nadine Gordimer« On the Mines is a re-designed and expanded version of David Goldblatt’s influential book of 1973. Goldblatt grew up in the South African town of Randfontein, which was shaped by the social culture and financial success of the gold mines surrounding it. When these mines started to fail in the mid-sixties Goldblatt began taking photos of them, which form the basis of this book. It includes an essay on the human and political dimensions of mining in South Africa by Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, whose writing has long influenced Goldblatt. The new version of the book maintains the original three chapters “The Witwatersrand: a Time and Tailings”, “Shaftsinking” and “Mining Men”, but is otherwise completely updated, in Goldblatt’s words, “to expand the view but not to alter the sense of things”. There are thirty-one new mostly unpublished photos including colour images, eleven deleted images, a postscript by Gordimer to her essay, as well as a text by Goldblatt reflecting on his childhood and the 1973 book. »

Alchemy tried in the fire : Starkey, Boyle, and the fate of Helmontian chymistry
William R. Newman, Lawrence M. Principe"What actually took place in the private laboratory of a mid-seventeenth century alchemist? How did he direct his quest after the secrets of Nature? What instruments and theoretical principles did he employ? Using, as their guide, the previously misunderstood interactions between Robert Boyle, widely known as "the father of chemistry," and George Starkey, an alchemist and the most prominent American scientific writer before Benjamin Franklin as their guide, Newman and Principe reveal the hitherto hidden laboratory operations of a famous alchemist and argue that many of the principles and practices characteristic of modern chemistry derive from alchemy. By analyzing Starkey's extraordinary laboratory notebooks, the authors show how this American "chymist" translated the wildly figurative writings of traditional alchemy into quantitative, carefully reasoned laboratory practice—and then encoded his own work in allegorical, secretive treatises under the name of Eirenaeus Philalethes. The intriguing "mystic" Joan Baptista Van Helmont—a favorite of Starkey, Boyle, and even of Lavoisier—emerges from this study as a surprisingly central figure in seventeenth-century "chymistry." L’avènement du Monde. Essai sur l’habitation humaine de la Terre

Avec cette majuscule, il ne s’agit pas de dire que le monde a changé sous l’effet de la mondialisation, mais d’affirmer qu’il est véritablement advenu, subvertissant les ordres anciens (empires, États, villes, etc.) et les catégories intellectuelles qui nous permettaient de les penser. La mondialisation bouleverse tout et construit de nouveaux cadres de vie et d’organisation des sociétés humaines. Les mutations sont de tous ordres et l’on a peine encore à stabiliser les analyses, sans doute parce que nos outils conceptuels, forgés aux XIXe et XXe siècles, sont désormais largement inadaptés. Ce livre ambitieux souhaite sortir de cette impasse et cerner quelques-unes des forces instituantes et imaginantes du Monde, et en particulier l’urbain, parce que le Monde se manifeste d’abord et surtout par de nouvelles manières d’habiter la Terre. Le Monde est une nouvelle organisation spatiale des réalités sociales, produisant des imaginaires inédits et contribuant à la création et à la diffusion d’images qui en elles-mêmes expriment la mondialité. Car le Monde nous traverse de part en part en permanence : nous en sommes chacun tout à la fois un produit, un jouet, un vecteur, un acteur. À partir de là, comment imaginer une « politique du Monde » quand on sait que l’avenir dépendra de notre capacité commune à garantir son habitabilité pour les décennies qui viennent ? »
