Derek Walcott"Alongside Joseph Brodsky's words of praise one might mention the more concrete honours that the renowned poet Derek Walcott has received: a MacArthur Fellowship; the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry; the Nobel Prize in Literature. This book draws from every stage of the poet's storied career. Une brève histoire du magnétisme : de l'aimant à la Terre
Jean-Louis Le Mouël, Jean-Paul Poirier"Voici une petite histoire du magnétisme, un phénomène qui ne cesse d intriguer savants et philosophes. Il porte plus spécifiquement sur l aimant et le magnétisme terrestre. Dès le XIIe siècle, on savait qu une aiguille d acier touchée par un aimant permettait de s orienter en mer : la boussole était née. À la fin du XVI e siècle, on comprit que la Terre se comportait comme un véritable aimant géant, avant que les caractéristiques du champ magnétique terrestre soient mesurés en tous lieux par les navigateurs et explorateurs. La science du magnétisme n'était pas close pour autant, puisqu'il fallut attendre le XXe siècle pour comprendre le magnétisme de l aimant grâce à la mécanique quantique. Quant au magnétisme terrestre, si on situe maintenant sa source dans le noyau fluide de la Terre, le mécanisme qui lui donne naissance reste toujours mal connu... Les auteurs traitent pour finir de l aimant en tant que « remède », du baquet de Mesmer, qui défraya la chronique en 1780, à l'IRM d'aujourd'hui. Ils analysent en outre la faculté dont seraient dotés les « magnétiseurs » de soigner des maladies par imposition des mains et les mystérieux pouvoirs des sourciers. "
